Reaching the point of zen...

After a lot of hassling to achieve a design that I felt was worthy of exhibition, I edited my last design, which was based on zen and serenity, linking with Japanese influences, to create the following.  The idea is to create seclusion, with the structure open from all sides.  The structure is also created keeping in mind lighting effects.  The idea of an enclosure, creating a sense of mystery to viewers outside was achieved.

Last but not least - Zen that was not so peaceful...

For my last pavilion proposal, I was inspired by the Sugamo Shimura Bank in Shimura, designed by Emmannuelle Moureaux.

This reminded me of the zen pavilions in the Japanese tradition, and therefore took it as a point of departure.  This led me to design the following, however, I was not satisfied with what I achieved and used it to move on into another direction.  After alot of stress and worry, I came up with another concept on the same lines, included in the next post.

Spinnaker Pavilion Scale Model...

Model at preliminary stage

Finished model

Inspiration for Spinnaker...

“A spinnaker is a special type of sail that is designed specifically for sailing off the wind from a reaching course to a downwind, i.e. with the wind 90°–180° off the bow.” - Wikipedia

Other inspirations -
Chinese Junk Ship - Google Images
Swallowtail Butterfly Wing - Science photo Library
Dried Leaves - My own image

The next pavilion idea...

Spinnaker -
Initial model - this was constructed out of chicken wire, double sided tape, and sheer fabrics.  The wires were sandwiched between two circles of cardboard, which formed the base.

Second working model - in actual fact this was my first attempt at a scale model, however I chose to work on too small a scale and therefore I had to redo the exercise.  The base of this model is clay, with the wires stuck into it, and fabric sails sewn to fit into the metal framings.

TV Studio Inspiration...

Origami – the main inspiration for my chosen tv set proposal.

The following examples are two origami creations.  The first is a 'triceratops' by Fumiaki Kawahata, while the second is a 'rose' by Kawasaki.

Inspired from origami - Foscarini lamp for DIESEL

Also inspired from origami - Kvadrat wall tiles

Making a model..

Making use of air-hardening, modeling clay, I started building up a structure, keeping in mind my idea for the reuse of vehicle tyres.

SWOOSH!

‘Swoosh’

London's Architectural Association School students' '08 pavilion "Swoosh".

London Festival of Architecture says: "The Swoosh Pavilion is the 2008 AA Summer Pavilion built annually by the second and third year students of Intermediate Unit 2 tutored by Charles Walker and Martin Self. For the students who conceive, design and construct the pavilion it’s a phenomenological exercise, going from idea to design and finally realization."

Bridge/Pavilion

The Zaragoza Bridge Pavilion, designed by Zaha Hadid and Patrick Schumacher, to be the main pavilion at the International Exposition '08 in Zaragoza, Spain.

Never Throw Stones at Glass Houses...

Eye-catching, pavilion-style, glass house which overlooks London’s Victorian Highgate Cemetery.

A Use for Tired Tyres? Maybe!

Go green or go home - the state of mind of the world today. I'm therefore considering designing a pavilion out of used car tyres, with my idea originating from the 'Earth Ship' homes that use tyres as insulation and foundation stones, and this picture of tyres used as seating.

Plastic Pavilion @ Botanical Heights

Architecture Students’ Plastic Pavilion

Washington Uni students helped design this pavilion as part of the $20m Botanical Heights project, in Missouri, USA.  The pavilion was assembled using 3,000 thermo-formed plastic panels, 1,500 steel plates, 4,000 fasteners and 8,000 washers.

Flowers for Flowers

Finished Piece

Having been asked to redesign a functional object in an innovative manner, I felt it the perfect opportunity to install some irony and wit into my work.  I decided to construct a vase, that’s usually FOR flowers, OUT of flowers.  Sourcing around 8 bouquets of yellow, paper roses, usually used for flower arrangements, and clipping them away from the leaves, I used yellow and green coloured glue to stick them together systematically.  Not 100% functional, as it obviously can’t hold water, my vase still has its purposes, like holding other artificial flowers, and candles too.

Knots & Feathers

Gucci Macramé Dress S/S’11
Finished Piece
For this assignment, after alot of deliberation, and flicking through issues of Vogue, I decided on two key trends of 2011/2012 to focus on, the modern craft extravaganza, and feathery features.  Inspired mainly by a Gucci beach dress of the S/S ’11 collection, which was completely constructed out of macramé, and, a pair of Dior S/S ’11 feather sandals, I put together my designs and ended up with a macramé corset and feather trousers.  The corset was brutal.  Macramé is cool to look at, granted, but though it’s pretty to look at, one forgets it’s basically knitting, with your hands!  The feather trousers have a cotton gabardine base and the feather trim was sewn on systematically.  Another key element of inspiration, Kurt Geiger’s feather trim boots, which perfectly match my trousers!
